Situated just above the south-west tip of the Crimean Peninsula, on the shores of a natural harbour, is Sebastopol, a treasure-house of historic monuments some 400 are listed in and around the city, not counting the archaeological sites. You will certainly admire a circular Panorama "The Defence of Sebastopol in the Crimean War", painted by Rubo or the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul (1843), whose classical facade resembles the Theseion of Athens. Any exploration of the city will not be complete without visiting the Malakhov Hill with its restored fortifications and the Eternal Flame in honour of Russian and Soviet naval heroes. |
